Traditional Stocking for
New or Renovated Ponds and Lakes

We encourage customers to follow the Missouri Department of Conservation's guidelines when stocking largemouth bass, bluegill sunfish and catfish. Recommended stocking rates are based on soil fertility and the lake's natural ability to produce food to sustain fish population.

"As a Rule of Thumb"

All counties north of the Missouri River, those counties located in the boot heel, and the following counties: St. Louis, Franklin, Saline, Pettis, Johnson, Lafayette, Jackson, Cass, Bates, Vernon, Barton and Jasper receive 100% or maximum stock rate.

The following counties have a 75% stocking rate option: Barry, Benton, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Cedar, Christian, Cole, Cooper, Dale, Dallas, Gasconade, Green, Henry, Hickory, Jefferson, Lawrence, McDonald, Moniteau, Newton, Osage, Perry, Polk, St. Clair, and Webster.

The following counties have a 50% stock rate: Bollinger, Camden, Carter, Crawford, Dent, Douglas, Howell, Iron, Laclede, Madison, Maries, Miller, Morgan, Oregon, Ozark, Phelps, Pulaski, Reynolds, Rippley, St. Francois, St. Genevieve, Shannon, Stone, Taney, Texas, Washington, Wayne and Wright.

Note: Periodic restocking of channel catfish and hybrid bluegill will be necessary to maintain a fishable population.

* These are maximum recommended numbers when the stocking objective is to raise large numbers of fish. If you decide to stock these rates, we recommend you purchase a pond aerator to protect your investment.

We recommend stocking new or renovated ponds/lakes with 500 - 1,000 fathead minnows per surface acre. We sell sexually mature fathead minnows by the pound with an average of 250 minnows per pound.
