Grass Carp
(White Amur)

White amur, more commonly known as grass carp, are an Asian fish and were introduced to the U.S. for the biological control of aquatic vegetation.
Grass carp require fast moving, clear water currents for spawning, therefore, cannot reproduce in ponds/lakes.
Grass carp feed almost exclusively on aquatic vegetation, will not muddy a pond like common carp and rarely disturb the nests of other fish. Grass carp stockers may eat 2-3 times their weight each day in warm water, may gain 5-10 pounds per year and can grow to over 60 pounds.
Grass carp are attracted to running water and may leave the pond/lake over the spillway during excessive runoff.
Stocking rates vary from 1 -20 per surface acre depending on the type and amount of vegetation infestation. If bass are present, stock an 8 -12" grass carp.
Grass carp become less effective at controlling aquatic vegetation when they reach 20 -30 pounds, usually 4 years after stocking and should be replaced with smaller stockers.
Grass carp are excellent to eat. Their flesh is firm and has a good flavor.
We sell 8-12" grass carp which are ideal for stocking into bass populations. Larger sized grass carp are available.
