Fathead Minnows

Fathead minnows provide excellent forage food for all fish species. Fatheads are slow swimmers and seldom grow larger than 3".
Sexual maturity is reached at 1 year of age (1"-2"). Spawning usually commences in May, when the water temperature reaches 65 degrees F and continues through early September. A single female lays from 200 -500 eggs per spawn and can spawn many times during one season. Eggs are attached by the male to the underside of objects.
To maximize their value as forage in new ponds/lakes, fatheads should be stocked one growing season before bass are introduced.
Fatheads rarely live longer than 2-3 years. Within 1 -2 years after bass are stocked, most fatheads will be eliminated.
Periodic stocking of fathead minnows at a rate of 1,000 - 2,000 per surface acre could greatly enhance fish growth, especially if you are not feeding a commercial fish food. Sufficient cover for the fatheads is recommended.
Stocking fathead minnows is not the recommended long-term answer to slow growing bass. Corrective restocking with bluegill is suggested.
We sell adult sized fathead minnows by the pound. Usually four pounds will equal 1,000 minnows. They are available March - June and Sept. - Nov.
