Crappie

Although a very popular sport and game fish with anglers, crappie often poses management problems in ponds/small lakes. Due to their tendency to over-populate, crappie (both black and white) are not normally recommended for stocking in lakes less than 25 acres. The Missouri Department of Conservation recommends not stocking crappie in lakes smaller than 100 acres. Depending on their size and physical condition, a single female can spawn anywhere from 15,000 - 200,000 off-Spring. Since crappie reproduce earlier than largemouth bass and bluegill, they have a jump on the natural food chain and may affect bluegill and bass growth. Many good bass and bluegill fisheries have been ruined after stocking crappie. Remember, this is the rule
and there will always be exceptions.
If your stocking objective is set on production of large crappie, we suggest delaying crappie stocking until after your largemouth bass have spawned several times. Since crappie are carnivorous and compete with bass for space and food, supplemental periodic stocking of fathead minnows or other recommended bait fish may be required to sustain both bass and crappie growth.
We sell several sizes of crappie for various stocking objectives. Larger sized crappie are in limited supply, order early.
Crappie handle better when water temperatures are cooler and are usually available March - mid-April and Oct. - mid-Nov.
