Redear Sunfish

Have you experienced or heard other fishermen complain about worms in fish flesh? Technically speaking, what fishermen are seeing is generally either the black or yellow grub.
Redear sunfish, also referred to "shell crackers" feed on small snails, clams, crayfish and other aquatic animal life. Redear sunfish help to reduce snail populations, which is a required host in the life cycle of the black and yellow grub. Redear sunfish are also popular sport fish and inhabit the deeper waters and seldom feed on the surface as do other sunfish. Due to their feeding habits, fishing for redear sunfish requires special fishing techniques.
If sufficient food is available, redear sunfish can grow to over 12" in length and weigh several pounds. The world record is slightly over 5 pounds and was caught in a small pond.
Redear sunfish rarely consumes commercial fish foods, which affects large scale production of larger redear sunfish by fish farmers. Due to low supply and increasing demands, larger redear sunfish are more expensive than other sunfish. If redear sunfish are desired, it is more cost effective to stock smaller sized redear sunfish during initial stocking than to wait until you have a problem with the black or yellow grubs.
The redear sunfish handles better when water temperatures are cooler. Smaller sized redear sunfish, 2-3", are usually available March - mid-April and Oct. - Nov.
Larger sized redear sunfish are in very limited supply. Order well in advance.
