The most important water quality parameter for growing fish in ponds is dissolved oxygen. A proven method to increase oxygen is the use of a quality aerator.
Fish can live for extended periods of time without food and under many other adverse conditions but only minutes without oxygen. Oxygen depletion is the leading cause of fish kills in ponds, both in summer and winter.
Fish stressed during periods of low oxygen are more susceptible to disease and parasite problems. Fish do not feed or grow as well when oxygen stays at low levels of 3 or 4 PPM (parts per million) for a prolonged length of
time.
Many believe a small pump re-circulating water will put sufficient oxygen back into their pond water. Do not make this mistake; a small pump or sprinkler system may help in some cases but normally does not provide adequate aeration for most
ponds stocked with fish.
